National Talent Search Examination 2018: How to Apply


National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is the most reputed nationwide scholarship exam to be held on annual basis. NTSE is organized by National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT), an autonomous organization of the Government of India for discovering brilliant student to nurture talent and enhance their career by awarding 1000 monthly scholarships. 

National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) is held at two levels, stage-I at state level and stage-II at national level for students studying in class 10th. This exam contains three papers. Paper-I is Mental Ability Test (MAT), paper-II is Language Test (LT) and paper- III is Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Stage-I, selection is done by state/union territories and those who qualify stage-I, are eligible to appear for stage-II examination.

Eligibility Criteria:

NTSE eligibility criterions are as follows-
1.     All students studying in class 10th are eligible for stage-I.
2.     Students must be below 18 year of age.
3.     Student attempting class 10th exam for the very first time.
4.     Open Distance Learning (ODL) students are eligible too for scholarship.
5.     ODL student should not be employed.

Structure of Exam:

National talent search exam comprises three papers as mentioned above and their no. of questions and marks can be seen in the following table- 


There is a negative marking in each paper at stage –II exam. For each wrong answer one-third (1/3) marks will be deducted. No marks will be deducted for not attempted questions.  

If there is any change in pattern for stage –II exam then the same will be conversed later on through NCERT website . Candidates are advised to keep track of updates on NCERT website. 

Qualifying Marks: 

Students belongs to general category should obtain minimum 40% marks in each paper of both level (stage-I, stage-II) while those who belongs to SC, ST and PH should obtain minimum 32% marks in each paper of both level (stage-I, stage-II). 

Language Test:

Language test is just a qualifying paper in nature and marks obtain in this paper will not be counted in final merit. 


15% scholarships are reserved for SC category students and 7.5% and 4% scholarships are reserved for ST and PH students respectively. 


Nearly 1000 scholarships are awarded for different stages of education that are as follows-

               1.     Scholarship of Rs. 1250/- per month for class 11th to 12th.
               2.     Scholarship of Rs. 2000/- per month for undergraduate and post-graduates.
               3.     Amount of scholarship for Ph.D. is fixed in accordance with the UGC norms.
